Anthropocene

Edward Burtynsky, Jennifer Baichwal, & Nicholas de Pencier | 2018

Anthropocene combines essays by writers, artists, and scientists with Edward Burtynsky’s incredible photographs. The book is part of Burtynsky, Baichwal, and de Pencier’s ‘The Anthropocene Project’ made over a four year period that chronicles the impact of anthropogenic influences on Earth and discusses the meaning of entering a new geological epoch. This particular book emphasizes Burtynsky’s aerial photography of places that have been markedly transformed by humans. The photos shown tackle themes like globalization’s physical consequences, how countries are fortifying against the impacts of climate change, and how environmental degradation can often be perversely beautiful. Every image and essay included is uniquely powerful. If you’re interested in environmental photography then this book, or honestly any by Burtynsky, is a good start.
